WTF Is In Your Sunscreen? Non Toxic Sunscreen Guide

by Gina Dal Molin

It’s officially Summer, which means plenty of fun in the sun!

Getting sunshine is vital to our health in so many ways but getting a sunburn is not. We all know we should be using sunscreen to protect against skin damage. But you might not know the sunscreen you are slathering on may be protecting your skin, but damaging your health. So how can we have fun in the sun without poisoning ourselves and the planet? The answer is non toxic sunscreen.

These days I’m trying hard to be an informed consumer by reading labels and choosing products based on their ingredients. The more I look, the more I see questionable ingredients in everything from personal care products to cosmetics that we use on our bodies every day. If you haven’t read my blog post on “WTF is in your toothpaste?” – it’s a good one.

When it comes to choosing a sunscreen there are so many options out there but which type is best? Let’s dive into the wide world of sunscreens, more importantly the non toxic sunscreen.

Keep Your Standards High

I’ve done the dirty work for you by picking out the cleanest sunscreens on the market that meet the strict standards set by the EWG (The Environmental Working Group), a non-profit activist group that specializes in research and advocacy in the areas of agricultural subsidies, toxic chemicals, drinking water pollutants, and corporate accountability. EWG scientists reviewed over 1,700 SPF products this year, but only 25% met their standards for your health and safety (a bit concerning).

Keep in mind that just because a brand has one non toxic product, not all of its sunscreens get a good EWG score. I’ve seen a “clean” brand have many varying levels of toxic products, which is why I like to verify each ingredient regardless of the brand.

How Sunscreen Works

Physical Sunscreen: Non toxic sunscreen, also referred to as mineral or physical sunscreen, relies on natural ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to create a physical barrier against the sun’s harmful UV rays. These minerals sit on the skin’s surface, reflecting and scattering UV radiation rather than being absorbed into the skin.

Chemical Sunscreen: On the other hand, chemical sunscreens use compounds like oxybenzone or octinoxate to absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat that is then released from the skin. The chemical sunscreens usually contain known toxins including parabens, phthalates, oxybenzone (banned in Key West & Hawaii), and octinoxate. They may also contribute to endocrine disruption, impacting hormonal balances, thyroid function, and potentially leading to serious health issues like cancer. Plus, they don’t just harm us, the chemicals are harming our oceans!

Mineral Sunscreen Benefits

  • Gentler on the Skin: Mineral sunscreens are generally considered gentler, making them suitable for sensitive skin types. They are less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions compared to chemical sunscreens.
  • Broad-Spectrum Protection: Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays, crucial for preventing sunburn, skin aging, and reducing the risk of skin cancer.
  • Environmentally Friendly: Chemical sunscreens have raised concerns about their impact on coral reefs and marine life. Non-toxic sunscreens, being mineral-based, are considered safer for aquatic environments.
  • Stability: Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are photostable, meaning they do not degrade when exposed to sunlight, providing longer-lasting protection.
  • Safe for All Ages: Non-toxic sunscreens are safe for use on children and infants, as well as during pregnancy, given their minimal risk of skin irritation and lower absorption into the body.

Tips For Application

To get the most out of your non-toxic sunscreen:

  • Apply Generously: Use enough sunscreen to cover all exposed skin areas (burnt earlobes are not fun…trust me)
  • Reapply Regularly: Especially after swimming or sweating, and at least every two hours when outdoors.
  • Combine with Protective Clothing: Hats, sunglasses, and clothing can complement sunscreen in providing comprehensive sun protection when the sun and UV levels are extreme.

This recent rise in popularity for non toxic sunscreens represents a shift towards safer and more environmentally conscious skincare practices. By choosing these products, your not only protecting your skin from harmful UV rays but also contributing to the preservation of marine ecosystems and reducing your exposure to harmful chemicals.

Embracing non toxic sunscreen is a positive step towards healthier skin and a cleaner environment for future generations. Let’s vote with our dollars and keep fighting the good fight together for a less toxic world.

ps. Avoid the sprays…it usually ends up in the wind and not on your body.

Happy Summer!
