Blood Orange Granita (Bright, Refreshing & Perfect For Citrus Season)

There’s nothing that captures citrus season quite like a blood orange granita.
It’s vibrant, refreshing, and incredibly simple—made with fresh blood orange juice, a hint of lemon, and delicate icy crystals that melt instantly on your tongue.
It’s the kind of dessert that feels effortless but elevated… like something you’d be served at a seaside café in Sicily on a warm afternoon.
Light, bright, and naturally sweet, this is one of those recipes you’ll come back to every citrus season.
Why Blood Oranges Are So Special
Blood oranges aren’t just beautiful, they have a unique flavor that makes this granita stand out.
- Slightly less acidic than regular oranges
- Subtle berry-like (almost raspberry) undertones
- Naturally deeper, more complex sweetness
Paired with a touch of lemon and a pinch of salt, the flavor becomes even more vibrant and balanced.
Optional Toppings (Highly Recommend)
- Fresh mint
- Extra blood orange zest
- A drizzle of honey
- A dollop of lightly whipped cream
Flavor Tips for the Best Granita
- Use freshly squeezed juice, it makes all the difference
- Don’t skip the lemon—it brightens everything
- A pinch of salt enhances sweetness and depth
- Scrape consistently for that signature light, fluffy texture

Blood Orange Granita
Ingredients
- 2 cups freshly squeezed blood orange juice about 6–8 blood oranges
- 2 –3 tbsp honey or sugar adjust to taste
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- Pinch sea salt
Instructions
- In a bowl, whisk together: Blood orange juice, Honey, Lemon juice, Pinch sea salt
- Taste and adjust sweetness — it should taste slightly sweeter than you want, since freezing dulls flavor.
- Pour mixture into a shallow baking dish.
- Place in freezer.
- After 30–45 minutes, scrape with a fork to create icy crystals. Repeat every 30 minutes for about 2–3 hours until fully frozen and fluffy. The more you scrape, the finer and more delicate the texture.

- Spoon into chilled glasses.
- Optional toppings: Fresh mint, Orange zest or a dollop of whipped cream
